Angle of Elevation Calculator

Find upward angle from height and horizontal distance

Angle of Elevation Formula

θ = tan⁻¹(height / distance)

Angle of elevation uses a right triangle formed by vertical height and horizontal distance. The tangent ratio connects the angle to those two lengths.

Height and horizontal distance must be positive and measured in the same unit. The result is shown in degrees.

How Angle of Elevation Works

The observer looks upward from a horizontal line of sight. The vertical height is opposite the angle, and the ground distance is adjacent.

Height

Vertical difference to the object.

Distance

Horizontal distance from observer.

Tangent Ratio

tan θ = height/distance.

Inverse Tangent

tan⁻¹ gives the angle.

💡 Example: For height=50 and distance=100, θ=tan⁻¹(0.5)=26.565°.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an angle of elevation calculator?
It finds the upward angle from an observer to a higher object.
What is the angle of elevation formula?
tan(θ)=height/horizontal distance, so θ=tan⁻¹(height/distance).
How do I use this calculator?
Enter the vertical height and horizontal distance, then click Calculate.
What units should I use?
Height and distance can use any unit, but both must use the same unit.
Where is angle of elevation used?
It is used in surveying, building height estimates, navigation, astronomy, and physics.
