The cube root of a number is the value that produces the original number when multiplied by itself three times. Unlike square roots, cube roots are defined for negative real numbers because a negative number cubed remains negative. Perfect cubes such as 8, 27, and 64 have integer cube roots, while most other numbers have decimal or irrational cube roots. A cube root reverses cubing. If y³=x, then y is the cube root of x. Because multiplying three negative numbers gives a negative result, negative numbers also have real cube roots.
