Calculate Conductance G = 1/R in Siemens

Select Mode
Resistance R (Ω)

Conductance Formulas

G = 1/R (siemens, S)
Parallel: Gt = G1 + G2 + ... + Gn
Series: 1/Gt = 1/G1 + 1/G2 + ... + 1/Gn
I = V × G (Ohm law using conductance)

Conductance is the reciprocal of resistance. It measures how easily current flows. High conductance = low resistance = easy current flow. The unit siemens (S) is named after Ernst Werner von Siemens. In circuit analysis, conductance simplifies calculations for parallel circuits since parallel conductances simply add.

Conductance rules are the dual of resistance rules. Parallel resistance: reciprocals add. Parallel conductance: values directly add. Series resistance: values add. Series conductance: reciprocals add. Always check if you are working with R or G!

Understanding Conductance

Conductance is particularly useful in parallel circuit analysis because parallel conductances add directly (Gt = G1 + G2 + ...). This avoids the reciprocal calculations needed for parallel resistance. Conductance is also used in semiconductor physics (channel conductance), electrolytic solutions, and power system analysis (admittance = conductance + j susceptance).

R to G Conversion

G = 1/R. 100Ω → 0.01S (10mS). 1kΩ → 0.001S (1mS). 1MΩ → 1μS. 1Ω → 1S.

Parallel G

Gt = G1 + G2 + ... (simple addition). Equivalent parallel R = 1/Gt. Much simpler than 1/Req formula!

Series G

1/Gt = 1/G1 + 1/G2 + ... (reciprocal). Equivalent series R = 1/Gt. More complex than series R.

Units & Prefixes

kS = 10³S, S = 1S, mS = 10⁻³S, μS = 10⁻⁶S, nS = 10⁻⁹S. Common: mS for electronics, μS for conductivity measurements.

Teaching Example: R=100Ω → G = 1/100 = 0.01 S = 10 mS.
Parallel G1=10mS (100Ω), G2=5mS (200Ω), G3=3mS (333Ω): Gt = 10+5+3 = 18mS. Req = 1/0.018 = 55.6Ω.
Series G1=10mS, G2=5mS: 1/Gt = 1/0.01+1/0.005 = 100+200 = 300. Gt = 1/300 = 3.33mS. Req = 300Ω.
Note: parallel G is additive (easy), series G is reciprocal (harder). Opposite of resistance!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is conductance?
G = 1/R in siemens (S). Measures how easily electricity flows. 1S = 1A/V. High G = low R = easy flow.
Parallel conductance vs parallel resistance?
Parallel G: add values (Gt = G1+G2). Parallel R: reciprocal (1/Rt = 1/R1+1/R2). G is simpler for parallel analysis.
What is the unit of conductance?
Siemens (S), formerly called mho (ohm spelled backwards). 1S = 1A/V. Named after Werner von Siemens. Symbol: ℧ (old) or S (modern).
Conductance vs conductivity?
Conductance (G) is for a specific component or length. Conductivity (σ) is a material property (S/m). G = σ × A/l where A=cross-section, l=length.
